MAN UTD TO ARSENAL, BUT AGENT REVEALS MKHITARYAN’S PREMIER LEAGUE ADVENTURE ALMOST STARTED

The Armenian midfielder is now with the Gunners, having previously spent time with the Red Devils, but he almost joined Liverpool back in 2013.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan’s Premier League journey has taken him from Manchester United to Arsenal, but a former agent has revealed it could have started at Liverpool.

Back in 2013, the Armenian playmaker was a much sought-after talent after starring for Shakhtar Donetsk.

Interest was shown from Anfield at that stage, with talks being held regarding a possible transfer.

However, Mkhitaryan was to part company with Dimitry Seluk around that time – despite the pair having been together since his Metalurh Donetsk days – and he ended up heading to Borussia Dortmund instead under the guidance of Mino Raiola.

Seluk, who suffered a falling out with Metalurh owner Oleg Mkrtchyan and the Armenian football federation before losing Mkhitaryan as a client, told TheseFootballTimes: “Eventually, we parted ways with him because of that whole situation.

“Obviously, by that time, Mkhitaryan had already become a well-known player, and when Borussia Dortmund offered Shakhtar €27 million for Henrikh, suddenly Raiola was all over him.

“Although I had already talked to Liverpool who were also interested in Mkhitaryan and wanted to sign him.

“If Mkrtchyan hadn’t lied to me and we hadn’t parted ways with Henrikh, he would have been a Liverpool player.”

Mkhitaryan went on to spend three productive years in Germany, with his time at Dortmund further enhancing his profile.

Manchester United had seen enough by 2016 to make a £30m move, but the 29-year-old struggled to earn the trust of Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford – despite helping the Red Devils to three trophies in 2016-17.

By January 2018 he was stuck on the fringes of the fold and jumped at the opportunity to head for Arsenal as part of a swap deal involving Alexis Sanchez.

Mkhitaryan has enjoyed a bright start to life with the Gunners, and is closing back in on full fitness after suffering knee ligament damage, but his career could have been markedly different had he headed for Anfield when the Premier League first came calling.
